Colonel Richard Lieber was a German immigrant and hardworking successful business man.  He was involved in several civic communities and committees and was an avid conservationist.  He was a delegate to the White House conference of 1908 discussing the nation's natural resources.  He advocated the creation of state parks and was chairman of the Indiana State Parks Committee in 1916.  Lieber put together lengthy plans for acquiring and preserving land throughout Indiana, ultimately leading to the creation of the first state parks, McCormick's Creek and Turkey Run.  He continued throughout his life to serve in other capacities to plan, conserve and maintain land, historic sites and memorials.  His remains are buried at his beloved Turkey Run.

I depicted Lieber surveying the land near Turkey Run's Sunset Point, day dreaming of the park's creation.  This acrylic painting is done on a Turkey Run State Park map, mounted onto hardboard.  I left the folds of the map obvious to the viewer, to draw them in, and make apparent that this is not a typical painting substrate.
